SYNERGETICS – Synergies for Green Transformation of Inland and Coastal Shipping

Inland and coastal shipping face great challenges with respect to a significant reduction of greenhouse-gas and air-pollutant emissions resulting from the requirements stipulated in the European Green Deal and the Taxonomy Regulation as well as the fact that improved environmental performance has become a feature of ever-increasing importance to the sector in order to remain competitive. SYNERGETICS is a Horizon Europe Innovation Action, a particularly application-oriented collaborative project looking at ways to reduce emissions in inland and coastal shipping through retrofit solutions.

LIFE Boat 4 Sturgeon

The overall objective of this LIFE project is to help save the four remaining Danube sturgeon species from extinction: the Sterlet, the Waxdick, the Sternhausen and the Hausen.

Integrated River Engineering Project on the Danube East of Vienna – Catalogue of Measures

On the free-flowing Danube east of Vienna, hydraulic engineering measures are being implemented to stabilise the falling water levels, preserve unique habitats in the Danube floodplains and align the waterway infrastructure with the requirements of safe and economic Danube navigation. In order to achieve these goals, maintenance activities are carried out on an ongoing basis and hydraulic engineering optimisation projects are implemented.

  • In the course of the Analysis of Navigability project, viadonau statistically analysed long-term gauge and flow data and processed them for various user groups from industry and the logistics sector.

  • The project goals cover the provision of support services in the field of inland navigation. The specific component of Lot 2 is the provision, operation and maintenance of RIS support tools. The participation of viadonau focuses in particular on the operation, further development and technical support for the European Ship Database (EU HULL DB).

  • WANDA

    The project WANDA (2009 - 2012) aimed at concerted development and exemplary implementation of preventive measures to ensure a sustainable, environmentally sound and transnationally coordinated approach in ship waste management along the Danube. In cross-border coordination stepwise a capable ship waste management system along the Danube needs to be established.

  • CO-WANDA

    Within the framework of the EU co-financed project CO-WANDA, the development of waste prevention measures on ships, the conception of an infrastructure network of reception points, the implementation of a polluter-pays financing model and possibilities for the use of River Information Services (RIS) were at the centre of the cooperation in the years 2012 - 2014. The concepts developed served as the technical content of an international agreement on the cross-border regulation of ship waste management in the Danube region.

  • The bilateral project between the Czech Republic and Austria is dedicated to the elaboration of near-natural flood protection measures in the area of the confluence of the rivers March and Thaya as well as the preparation of a renaturation concept for the Lower Thaya.

  • DONAU ON TOUR

    The former stone transport ship Negrelli was converted into a floating information platform and has been travelling on the Austrian Danube since autumn 2007 to provide on-site information about the activities of the waterway company, the potential of the Danube waterway and the diversity of the Danube ecosystem.  

  • Inland ENC's are digital maps for inland waterway transportation. The system runs on vector data, which allows detailed display of data and ensures steady and clearly represented information.

  • In phase 2 of the study the developments in the Rhine Danube Corridor were monitored and the update of the corridor work plan was prepared.

  • The working aid is a guideline for a standardised procedure from gathering basic data to the categorisation of flood protection dams and the presentation of priorities for rehabilitation measures.
