Baseline Situation & Challenges
Smoothly operated locks are essential for the planning and reliability of navigation. A lock revision strategy has been developed and implemented in the course of the Danube Action Programme until 2022 between the Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology and the plant owner Verbund Hydro Power. In the Danube Action Programme 2030, the activities already set are to be continued.
By using already developed digital tools, such as the DoRIS-supported electronic lock diary, reliable technical aids have also been created to ensure shorter and plannable waiting times for navigation.
The task for the next few years is to further develop digital tools to improve lock processes, modernise the technical equipment of the locks, provide ongoing training for lock personnel and evaluate and improve the lock revision strategy already developed.
Remote controllability of the locks in emergencies as well as further software support for traffic management are to lay the foundation for dealing with automated vessels in the long term.
Planned Activities
- Continue lock revision strategy and adapt if necessary
- Modernise the technical equipment of the locks
- Initiatives to increase safety during lock operations (e.g. training of lock supervisors)
- Increase efficiency and resilience of process flows in lock operations, e.g. through digital support for staff, improvement of radio coverage and introduction of remote control
