Integrated River Engineering Project on the Danube East of Vienna – Catalogue of Measures

On the free-flowing Danube east of Vienna, hydraulic engineering measures are being implemented to stabilise the falling water levels, preserve unique habitats in the Danube floodplains and align the waterway infrastructure with the requirements of safe and economic Danube navigation. In order to achieve these goals, maintenance activities are carried out on an ongoing basis and hydraulic engineering optimisation projects are implemented.

Further projects

  • In the course of the continuous activity hydro-ecological structures are being created and maintained in order to improve the ecological functionality of habitats along the Danube, March and Thaya.

  • The Austrian Danube River Information Services - DoRIS have been operational since 2006. The infrastructure and the deployed technologies for one of the main functions of DoRIS, the support of traffic information on the basis of the Inland-AIS standards, are accordingly outdated. Therefore, viadonau is steadily working on the gradual renewal of relevant system elements.

  • viadonau participates in several expert committees, in order to actively shape rules and regulations in the field of inland navigation. The aim is the sharing of expertise regarding nautical-technical innovations in inland navigation (with a focus on Danube navigation).

  • In the course of this activity an administrative reform of the Danube Flood Control Agency (DHK) is being prepared, for which viadonau is the legally defined managing authority.

  • In 2017, viadonau started a project for the standardisation of the operational maps used by various authorities and emergency services in the event of floods, ship accidents or similar incidents.

  • The project's objective is the establishment of an approx. 700 metre long system of islands and sidearms in the Danube stretch between the powerplant Abwinden-Asten and the mouth of the river Enns as well as the optimisation of the mouth of the Enns.

  • viadonau participates in several expert committees, in order to actively shape rules and regulations in the field of inland navigation. The aim is the sharing of expertise regarding nautical-technical innovations in inland navigation (with a focus on Danube navigation).

  • In the framework of the transnational, EU co-financed project DANUBEparksCONNECTED a grazing experiment was started in 2017 on the DHK dike "Marchfeldschutzdamm" in the area of Stopfenreuth. viadonau, as managing body of the Danube Flood Control Agency (DHK), is a strategic partner in this project and supports the grazing experiment as addition or (small-scale) alternative to the mowing of vegetation on dams in the framework of the meadow management.

  • The LIFE project Auenwildnis Wachau started in 2015 and will be concluded in 2022. Between Rossatz and Rührsdorf, on the right Danube river bank, a new 1.67 km long side arm will be established, extending the existing side arm system. The enlargement of a bridge and an additional overflow section will guarantee the connection of the existing side arm system to the flow regime of the Danube. At Schönbühel and Rossatz approx. 50 ha of the namesake floodplains will be established as a nature conservation area. Furthermore, the project also includes species conservation measures in the entire Wachau for the sea eagle, the black poplar and amphibians.
