Building on the experience gained from previous projects (Polder Soutok, Thaya2020), this project evaluated the renaturalisation potential of the Thaya border section as well as the natural and current drainage dynamics. As part of the project, five meanders that were cut off from the main river in the course of regulation were reconnected to the Thaya (D1, D3, D5, D12, D15).

In consultation with relevant stakeholders, concepts and measures for future development were planned and established with regard to flood waves, natural river dynamics and knowledge transfer in terms of water management. The preliminary results were presented at a symposium on 6/7 October 2022.

News & project status

The project was completed in 2022. The reconnection of the meanders was successfully implemented at the end of 2022. In addition, a well-founded renaturalisation concept is now available, which provides an important basis for the planning and implementation of future projects on the lower Thaya.
