Since 2012 viadonau runs a system for automated creation of water-level forecasting, which will support decision making in low water situations. Forecasts are publicised publicly available in the internet repeatedly on a daily basis. Shipping companies, logisticians and other waterway users show interest in applying the data. In collaboration with the TU Vienna a hydrologic balance model was elaborated which includes different up-to-date methods to guarantee correct real-time data.

News and activity status
In November 2018, the Technical University of Vienna was commissioned with a comprehensive optimisation of the water balance model. The focus was on more accurate calculation of low water periods and improved protection against failures or grossly incorrect forecasts.
The system optimisation was completed in summer 2020 and led to the desired result. The quality criteria required by viadonau at the Kienstock and Wildungsmauer gauges were achieved with the optimised forecasting system and the forecast quality for the various relevant gauges in the model area was significantly improved.
