How are buoys placed?

Captain FAIRway addresses this question in the third and, for the time being, last video in the FAIRway works! series. By acquiring a second pusher vessel "FAIRway works! In the Rhine-Danube Corridor" has helped to make the placing of fairway buoys on the Austrian Danube more efficient, safer and more environmentally friendly.

Shore Side Electricity for Inland Waterway Transport

"FAIRway works! In the Rhine-Danube Corridor" is modernizing three mooring places in Austria. By equipping them with shore side electricity systems, they will help to make inland waterway cargo transport even more environmentally friendly in future. This short video explains how this can be achieved:

Upgrade of the Mooring Place Wildungsmauer

As part of the FAIRway Danube follow-up project "FAIRway works! In the Rhine-Danube-Corridor", various infrastructure measures are being implemented along and on the Danube in cooperation with Serbia. One of these (Activity 6) is the upgrade of the mooring place in Wildungsmauer. This short video explains what mooring places are and how they are built:

Upgrade of Serbian Iron Gate 2 Navigation Locks (Đerdap 2)

All participants in waterway transport are informed that the Serbian navigation lock Iron Gate 2 (Đerdap 2) will be taken out of operation in the period from 18/07/2023 to 17/07/2024 due to a general renovation in order to increase reliability and shorten the duration of lockings. The vessel trafic from rkm 858 to rkm 868 of the Danube will be taken over by the Romanian side of the Đerdap 2 lock.

As part of the EU co-financed project FAIRway works! in the Rhine-Danube corridor, the Iron Gate 2 (Đerdap 2) lock is being upgraded. The Serbian Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure has commissioned the modernization of the lock to increase reliability and reduce lock cycle time. The contract for the works was awarded to DSD Noell (https://www.dsd-noell.com/en). The company has extensive experience and has already modernized the Serbian Iron Gate 1 lock and the locks on the Danube-Black Sea Canal.

The current schedule foresees modernization works starting July 18, 2023, which will take a maximum of one year. In order to ensure the continuity of traffic, the Romanian locks in the proximity can be used during the closure of the Serbian locks. This procedure was already successfully applied during the modernization of the Iron Gate 1 lock and worked without any problems.

Due to the measurable success of the modernization of the Iron Gate 1 lock (Đerdap 1), the inland navigation sector can look forward to the results of the modernization of Đerdap 2. For FAIRway works! this will be another major milestone made possible by the co-financing of the European Union's Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) and a loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB) to further improve the quality of Danube navigation.

Lighter for Marking

As part of the international, EU co-financed project "FAIRway works! In the Rhine-Danube corridor", equipment for improving waterway management is being acquired for the Austrian Danube. A first part of this equipment has been in use since spring of 2021 in the form of the lighter for marking „Bojenleger 2“.

Mooring Place Linz

Within the framework of the FAIRway Danube Follow-Up Project "FAIRway works! In the Rhine-Danube-Corridor", various infrastructure measures alongside and on the Danube are being implemented in cooperation with Serbia. One of them (Activity 5) is the upgrade of the mooring place Linz:

Project Kick-Off

The project started on 1 March 2020. Currently, the contractual arrangements are being finalised.

An external Kick-Off Meeting was conducted jointly with the "sister-project" Preparing FAIRway2 in the Rhine-Danube corridor in March 2021.
