"Iron Gate 2"

Upgrade of the Serbian "Iron Gate 2" navigational lock: Public procurement (Lead: RS)

This Activity covers all tasks regarding the public procurement of the works on Iron Gate II (rkm 863) as well as the supervision of those works. The foreseen activities will improve functional performance of the lock and reduce the duration of its lock cycles. Moreover, reliability, predictability and stability of operations will be increased, resulting in a decrease of waiting times for vessels, the elimination of unscheduled downtime risks and improved safety of navigation.

Upgrade of the Serbian "Iron Gate 2" navigational lock: Works & Supervision (Lead: RS)

This Activity covers the works and supervision of works for the upgrade the Iron Gate II navigational lock. Works will ensure good navigation status along the Serbian section of the Danube and the overall Rhine-Danube Corridor.

In detail, the works will comprise:

  • Upgrade works for the electro-hydraulic drives and all its components
  • Upgrade and reconstruction hydro-mechanical works
  • Upgrade of the ancillary systems of the lock
  • Structural, civil engineering and hydro-technical upgrades and reconstruction works on the lock

Upgrade of the Serbian "Iron Gate 2" navigational lock: Operational Concept (Lead: RS)

This Activity includes a pilot operation phase to test the effectiveness of the works measures and, based on the results, development of a new operational concept for the Iron Gate navigation lock.

Equipment (RS)

Serbian Equipment for Ensuring Year-Round Navigability (Lead: RS)

This Activity covers the public procurement, the construction and supervision of one multifunctional marking and one surveying vessel and AIS AtoNs for the Danube and Sava rivers. The surveying vessel will be equipped with multibeam and ADCP equipment, the marking vessel will be designed to ensure operability in low water conditions. 100 modern buoys equipped with AIS module and light module will be procured and deployed along the Sava River. These will enable remote monitoring of the position of floating marking signs.

Mooring Places

Upgrade of public infrastructure for mooring operations along the Austrian Danube (Lead: AT)

Three mooring places (Linz, Wildungsmauer and Vienna) will be turned into state-of-the-art facilities that comply with today’s and tomorrow’s quality demands of the commercial shipping sector. The upgrades will lead to increased safety of mooring, embarking and disembarking operations, and improved planning of resting and consequently travel times. In addition, the installation of shore-side electricity facilities will improve the environmental performance of inland navigation by decreasing emissions.

  • Linz

The infrastructure upgrade of the mooring place at Linz (river-km 2129,22 – 2128,90) will improve the riverbank construction though the installation of dolphins, access bridges for crew members and their means of transport, and the installation of a shore-side electricity facility. Project activities cover in addition the public procurement, the supervision of works as well as the preparation of an operational concept to facilitate the use of the mooring place after finalisation. The measure will be finalised with a pilot operation.

  • Wildungsmauer

The upgrading activities of the mooring place “Wildungsmauer” (river-km 1894,60 – 1895,12) cover besides the construction works, the public procurement activities, the supervision of the construction works and the definition of an operational concept.

  • Vienna

This Activity covers the upgrade of at least 220 meters at the mooring place Brigittenau in Vienna (river-km 1931,56-1932,50). It includes the public procurement, the construction works for the upgrade of the mooring place and supervision of works. In addition, the preparation of an operational concept will facilitate the use of the mooring place after finalisation.

Equipment (AT)

Austrian Equipment for Ensuring Year-Round Navigability (Lead: AT)

This Activity covers the public procurement, the construction and supervision of multifunctional marking equipment (pusher and lighter) for the Austrian Danube section, which will be used for the following main functions:

  • To carry out marking operations along the entire Austrian Danube, focusing on the two free-flowing sections “Wachau” (river km 2038,16 to 1998,00) and “East of Vienna” (river km 1921,05 to 1872,70);
  • To gather data to define the position of the buoys to mark the river trajectory;
  • To carry out inspection trips (single beam echo sounder) and meetings on-site with the relevant stakeholders
