By signing the ECMA (European Corridor Management Agreement), Port of Switzerland has become an official partner of EuRIS – the European River Information System. This European information portal provides vessels and transport processes on the European inland waterway network with important static and dynamic information in real time.

On 12–13 May 2026, the partners of EuRIS met in Basel for the Council meeting. One of the highlights of this meeting was the signing of the ECMA (European Corridor Management Agreement) by Port of Switzerland, acting as the competent Swiss enforcement authority for Rhine navigation. With this step, Switzerland officially joined EuRIS, the European information portal for inland navigation.

The EuRIS portal was launched in 2022 as a result of a partnership between 13 European countries. Its goal is to provide easy and reliable access to static and dynamic information about European inland waterways. Today, EuRIS covers more than 27,000 kilometers of European inland waterways.

River Information Services (RIS) comprise a wide range of harmonised information services that support traffic management and transport operations in inland navigation. The use of RIS enhances traffic safety and increases transport efficiency by simplifying the exchange of traffic  and transport related information among all stakeholders in inland navigation.

The crew on board is continuously supported with real-time information on the current traffic situation along their planned route. This includes, among other things, details on waiting times, events, and disruptions that may affect journey duration and voyage planning.
The development of the EuRIS portal is ongoing, with a strong focus on improving usability and data quality.

With Switzerland’s accession, all Rhine waterway sections will be accessible via the EuRIS portal, further enhancing comprehensive European coverage.

With the signing of the ECMA, the publication of Swiss waterway data in the EuRIS portal will be implemented over the coming months.
