The scope of the project is to evaulate the possibilities/prerequisites for the use of alternative forms of propulsion and non-fossil fuels in the inland navigation sector. It aims to provide a basis for decision-making for political representatives, responsible authorities, infrastructure operators and the shipping sector in order to implement further steps towards decarbonisation of the transport sector.
The competitiveness of inland navigation can be increased by the use of new types of propulsion technologies and fuels in freight and passenger vessels and the development of a shore-based supply infrastructure.
The project's success is measured by the regular surveys "Customer Satisfaction Waterway and Locks" and "Satisfaction Business Partners".
News and project status
During the project, in close consultation with the Supreme Shipping Authority, viadonau tested the environmentally friendly fuel hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO100) in the Bad Deutsch-Altenburg push boat. During the 15-month pilot phase, which started in September 2023 and lasted until December 2024, a total of 17,000 litres of HVO100 were refuelled.
With CO₂ savings of 88.6% compared to conventional diesel and a reduction of 52.1 tonnes of CO₂, HVO100 showed considerable potential for reducing emissions. The crew of the viadonau reported no differences in operation, consumption or handling of the fuel. The inspection confirmed that the fuel system was functioning perfectly. The pilot phase thus confirms the practicality and ecological benefits of the alternative fuel.
The activity makes a substantial contribution to the implementation of measure 10. Promote environmentally friendly fleet modernisation of the Action Programme for the Danube 2022 and of work package 09. Supporting the transition to climate-neutral/climate-friendly fuels and forms of propulsion in Danube navigation of the Action Programme Danube 2030.
