Up-to-date water level information is required by many different stakeholders, including waterway users (e.g. skippers or authorities). Especially during high and low water data on water levels is important to protect lives and assets. The gauging data is needed to operate information services used for internal processes or as source of information for the users of the Danube waterway.
Since the beginning of 2016 the remote maintenance of the existing measuring network is no longer possible due to changes in the provider system. A new way to transfer gauging data was sought and the currently available technical implementation possibilities were assessed and evaluated. Gauging stations with high priority were technically upgraded in 2015. For all other gauging stations the status quo of the data transfer can be maintained.
