Improvements

The web portal’s entire layout has been restructured, giving it a fresh, modern look and making it far more mobile-friendly. The renewed portal follows a map centric approach, users can select which information layers they need and create a personal selection. The new menu structure is more intuitive and filter options are extended and easier to use. To familiarize themselves with the new portal, users can take a guided “What’s New” tour. In the backend of the portal, multiple technical improvements have been implemented, including enhanced cyber security measures and updated application programming interfaces (API’s). With this redesign, the EuRIS portal is ready for the future.

EuRIS Survey

The survey conducted in 2024 among 769 inland waterway users showed a general appreciation score of 3.5 out of 5, indicating a rather positive reception of the online portal. However, even though users appreciated the potential of EuRIS, they also suggested several improvements. Based on the feedback, the EuRIS partners have updated and improved the web portal and will work on further optimisation.

EuRIS

The EuRIS portal was released in 2022 as the result of a partnership between 13 countries, with the goal of providing easy access to static and dynamic information on the waterways throughout Europe. Over 27 000 km of European inland waterways are covered.

Skippers and other users can access real-time information at any time and gain insight into the actual traffic situation on their sailing route, including waiting times, incidents or disruptions that affect the travel time. Furthermore, with an account they can share information with others, such as their ETA. All of this is provided within a protected environment that ensures the privacy of all users.

Almost all information on EuRIS is publicly available for non-registered users. The number of registered accounts has risen to 6500 and still continuous to grow. EuRIS also provides open data via API’s allowing commercial parties to retrieve data from EuRIS and to share and visualize in their own applications. Every 24 hours, EuRIS receives over 4 million data requests to this end.

EuRIS’ Future

The EuRIS partners will keep developing the portal. Upcoming improvements will include:

  • Single Sign On (SSO) capabilities
  • enhanced search and graphs
  • a day/night mode
  • information of supplies such as power and water
  • expansion of the fairway network

Naturally, quality of data remains an ongoing focus.
