By implementing the INTERREG project ProDaM, the joint flood management for the border rivers Danube and Morava (March) will be optimised. Austrian and Slovak experts work together within the meaning of the EU Flood Directive. On the basis of common underlying data and models, concerted flood protection measures should be drawn up that cover the residual risk for the border regions.

The following individual objectives are being pursued:

  • establishment of common data bases (common terrain model and hydrodynamic model)
  • analysis & building of a shared understanding of the residual risk and its management
  • minimisation of the flood-induced impacts on agricultural land in the area of Wolfsthal-Petržalka
  • planning of flood protection measures and systems in the area of Wolfsthal-Petržalka

News and project status

Preparatory works for this project have been going on since 2014. Due to delays on the part of the funding programme, the official funding approval was obtained at the end of 2017. The first activity within the project is the development of a terrain model. For that purpose, the terrain in the area of the border stretches of the Morava and the Danube will be surveyed using laser scan technology and bathymetric surveying.

The laser scan survey was conducted during the vegetation-free period in spring 2020 at the border stretch of Morava and Danube. The mapped area comprises ca. 750km² complemented by river bed measurements. Evaluation and analyses were completed in Autumn 2020. At the moment, there are discussions about an associated planning group for the preparation of a hydrodynamic model.

The project makes a substantial contribution to the implementation of measure
20. Optimise flood protection management across organisations and borders of the Action Programme for the Danube 2022.
