SYNERGETICS – Synergies for Green Transformation of Inland and Coastal Shipping

Inland and coastal shipping face great challenges with respect to a significant reduction of greenhouse-gas and air-pollutant emissions resulting from the requirements stipulated in the European Green Deal and the Taxonomy Regulation as well as the fact that improved environmental performance has become a feature of ever-increasing importance to the sector in order to remain competitive. SYNERGETICS is a Horizon Europe Innovation Action, a particularly application-oriented collaborative project looking at ways to reduce emissions in inland and coastal shipping through retrofit solutions.

Integrated River Engineering Project on the Danube East of Vienna – Catalogue of Measures

On the free-flowing Danube east of Vienna, hydraulic engineering measures are being implemented to stabilise the falling water levels, preserve unique habitats in the Danube floodplains and align the waterway infrastructure with the requirements of safe and economic Danube navigation. In order to achieve these goals, maintenance activities are carried out on an ongoing basis and hydraulic engineering optimisation projects are implemented.

Further projects

  • Im „Jahresbericht Donauschifffahrt in Österreich“ werden Daten und Fakten zur Donauschifffahrt in übersichtlicher Form zusammengefasst und von viadonau-Expertinnen und -Experten interpretiert.

  • In the course of the continuous activity hydro-ecological structures are being created and maintained in order to improve the ecological functionality of habitats along the Danube, March and Thaya.

  • started 2015

Die logistische Informationsbereitstellung für den Schifffahrtssektor ergänzt die Informationen für Schiffsführer auf der DoRIS-Website.

  • Since the gravel bank at Linz-Urfahr was destroyed by the flood in June 2013, viadonau conducted a hydro-ecological landscaping project which aimed at restoring the gravel bank, while actively involving the local population.

  • The project seeks to improve the quality of Danube waterway infrastructure and information services by enhancing transnational cooperation between waterway authorities and by harmonising waterway management along the Danube.

  • started 2015

The fish ladder Nussdorf resolves the barrier of the weir and power plant Nussdorf and connects the two habitats of the Danube Canal and the Danube.

  • In the course of the project the future alignment of the maintenance activities conducted by viadonau in the border sections of Morava and Thaya was elaborated, including a position statement for the negotiations in the Transboundary Water Commissions.

  • The objective of this project is to overcome the interoperability issues that result from different individual logistics information systems used by different actors in the supply chain (both intra- and cross-company), by developing the cloud-based AEOLIX Platform.

  • The Danube berth 30 Hainburg will be moved upstream and rebuilt at river kilometre 1884.0 to 1884.2.

  • The Austrian Danube River Information Services - DoRIS have been operational since 2006. The infrastructure and the deployed technologies for one of the main functions of DoRIS, the support of traffic information on the basis of the Inland-AIS standards, are accordingly outdated. Therefore, viadonau is steadily working on the gradual renewal of relevant system elements.
