Challenges

Embedding Danube navigation in European strategies creates a better political and regulatory framework and, in addition, facilitates access to EU funding. The Priority Area “Inland Navigation” of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region, the NAIADES 2 policy package “Towards quality inland waterway transport” and the requirements of the Trans-European transport networks are of particular importance. Also, the exchange of expertise and the harmonisation of frameworks in the course of international projects create the necessary basis for the development of inland navigation in Europe. Austria shall continue to play a pro-active role in shaping inland navigation policies of the European Union.
