The National Action Plan Danube Navigation (NAP) has been enshrined in the current federal government programme since 2007 and is the strategic instrument for promoting Austrian inland navigation.

With forty measures in ten different subject areas – ranging from infrastructure, to fleets, to training and even to international cooperation – greater use of the waterway (taking into account environmental interests and safety) should be achieved by 2015. viadonau was responsible for the implementation of NAP on behalf of bmvit (since 2020: BMK). In recent years, central incentives have been set in order to make navigation more innovative, more reliable and more environmentally friendly.
